River City Girls

River City’s gangs have made a serious mistake by kidnapping the wrong people. River City Girls turns the classic Kunio-kun brawler formula over to Kyoko and Misako, two relentlessly confident students who tear across a colorful, crime-ridden city to rescue their boyfriends. The result is a loud, funny, and surprisingly character-driven side-scrolling beat-’em-up with an exaggerated anime attitude, sharp comic timing, and plenty of affection for arcade-era street fights. Pixel-art backdrops, manga-style dialogue scenes, and animated cutscenes give every district its own personality.

Most of the campaign revolves around clearing screens of thugs, grabbing cash, and pushing toward the next lead in the rescue plot. Kyoko and Misako each have their own fighting style, then expand their move sets through experience, shop purchases, food-based stat boosts, weapons, throws, and screen-clearing special attacks. Combat is easy to grasp—light and heavy strikes, jumping attacks, blocks, dodges, and grapples—but it becomes more enjoyable once crowds force you to manage positioning and juggle enemies instead of simply mashing buttons. Six connected areas contain stores, hidden routes, bosses, side jobs, and familiar faces from the wider River City series, while local co-op lets a second player join the brawl.

What separates River City Girls from more straightforward beat-’em-ups is its RPG-like structure and its unabashedly silly presentation. Defeated enemies can become temporary allies, shops reward detours, and the city feels more like a compact adventure map than a string of disconnected levels. Its synth-pop soundtrack is a standout, matching the bright visuals and cheeky writing without losing the impact of the fights. Fans of Streets of Rage, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game, or Double Dragon Neon should feel at home, while newcomers get a forgiving, energetic entry point with more personality than most retro-inspired brawlers.
