Salt and Sanctuary turns the familiar side-scrolling action format into a grim, demanding Souls-like adventure built around oppressive atmosphere and dangerous discovery. Its hand-drawn world is all rotting stone, sickly fog, grotesque monsters, and mournful ruins, creating a bleak fantasy tone that rarely lets up. Survival depends less on reflexes alone than on patience, observation, and knowing when to retreat from a fight that is going badly.

Combat is weighty and methodical, using stamina for attacks, rolls, blocks, and spellcasting, while enemies punish reckless button-mashing with hard-hitting combos and ambushes. Players choose a starting class, then shape their warrior through an expansive skill tree that unlocks weapon types, armor proficiencies, miracles, sorcery, and stat upgrades. Salt, the game’s main resource, serves as both experience and currency; dying leaves it behind, so recovering it from the place of defeat becomes an important risk-reward decision. Sanctuaries act as checkpoints and customizable hubs where merchants, blacksmiths, alchemists, and other allies can be installed, while local co-op lets a second player join the expedition as a sellsword.

What separates Salt and Sanctuary from most 2D action RPGs is how confidently it adapts the structure of Dark Souls into interconnected platforming spaces without losing its own identity. Secret routes, shortcuts, towering bosses, faction-like creeds, and an enormous selection of gear make each build feel distinct, whether you favor colossal blades, quick daggers, shields, ranged magic, or faith-based powers. The island rewards careful map knowledge and repeated runs, although its deliberately murky visuals and punishing difficulty can be intimidating at first. Fans of Dark Souls, Blasphemous, Hollow Knight, or Castlevania-style exploration find a dense and satisfying challenge here, while newcomers should expect to learn through failure rather than gentle instruction.
