Sam & Max: Beyond Time and Space (GOG)

A deadpan canine detective and his hyperviolent rabbit partner return for another season of surreal cases, beginning with a Christmas crisis involving a monstrous Santa Claus at the North Pole. Sam & Max: Beyond Time and Space is a comedic point-and-click adventure built around absurd conspiracies, ridiculous wordplay, and a world where harmless holiday traditions can become armed threats. The tone is gleefully cartoonish rather than grim, even when the pair faces possessed elves, demonic forces, and threats to reality itself. Each episode turns a familiar setting or theme into a bizarre supernatural mystery.

Players investigate compact, richly interactive locations by clicking through scenery, collecting odd inventory items, questioning suspects, and combining clues in suitably illogical ways. Progress usually comes from exhausting sharp dialogue trees and figuring out how one joke-driven object can solve another character’s problem, with occasional arcade-style diversions breaking up the traditional adventure pacing. The six connected episodes move from the North Pole to alternate dimensions, ancient tombs, and the office of the afterlife, while a larger villain gradually emerges behind the chaos. Puzzles can be deliberately eccentric, as expected from the genre, but the game generally gives players enough visual and conversational feedback to keep experimentation enjoyable.

What separates Beyond Time and Space from many classic adventures is the chemistry between its leads: Sam’s dry legalistic nonsense perfectly offsets Max’s enthusiastic appetite for destruction. The stylized 3D cartoon presentation and strong voice acting preserve the energy of the original comics while making every location feel like a stage for another escalating gag. Its episodic structure also makes it easy to play in short bursts, though the recurring characters and mounting plot reward a full run.
