Septerra Core

A decaying world of stacked continents and ancient machinery gives this classic RPG a setting few genre games attempt. Septerra Core follows Maya, a scavenger from the industrial underclass, as a religious-technological conspiracy threatens to destroy the entire planet. Its seven landmasses circle a living central computer at different heights, creating a strange blend of fantasy ruins, science fiction, and social conflict. The tone is dramatic and occasionally melodramatic in the late-1990s PC tradition, but the stakes remain compelling as Maya gathers allies from radically different cultures.

Progress comes through story-heavy exploration across towns, deserts, laboratories, temples, and hostile strongholds. Players search environments with an adventure-game-style interface, collect key items, speak with a large cast, solve light environmental puzzles, and build a party from nine potential companions. Combat uses a hybrid system: characters act in real time as action meters fill, while tactical positioning, target selection, special abilities, healing, and resource management still matter. Every recruit brings distinct skills and motives, so the group feels like more than a collection of interchangeable fighters. Battles can be demanding early on, particularly for players unused to older RPG interfaces, and patience with menus, inventory management, and occasional backtracking pays off.

What separates Septerra Core from its contemporaries is the scale of its vertical world and the way its political factions, mythology, and technology overlap. More than 200 areas give the adventure a substantial sense of travel, while extensive voiced dialogue helps sell its eclectic cast despite some uneven performances and dated presentation. Its visuals and controls clearly belong to its era, yet the imaginative setting still carries it far beyond many forgotten RPGs of the period.
