Nineteenth-century China becomes a fractured battlefield where a religiously driven uprising threatens to break an ancient dynasty from within. SGS Taipings is a serious historical turn-based wargame centered on the Taiping Rebellion, placing players in command of either the revolutionary Heavenly Kingdom or the overstretched Qing Empire. Its tone is grim, methodical, and unsentimental: this is a conflict of supply, leadership, regional control, and political collapse rather than a heroic battlefield fantasy. The grand campaign spans the rebellion’s full 1851–1864 timeline, while shorter scenarios let players focus on key stages of the war.

Each monthly turn asks both sides to move armies, manage commanders, secure territory, and react to an unstable political situation. Taiping players need to build momentum quickly, raise capable forces, coordinate with sympathetic rebellions, and turn early surprise into a durable state before internal disputes undermine the cause. Qing commanders begin in a far more disorganized position, with scattered troops, ineffective leadership, and a court that initially underestimates the emergency; building new formations, obtaining modern weapons, and appointing better officers becomes essential. Land and naval forces both matter, and foreign involvement introduces another layer of uncertainty, allowing diplomacy and outside pressure to complicate even a well-planned campaign.

What makes SGS Taipings compelling is its asymmetric design. The rebels play an urgent expansion game, gambling on speed and alliances, while the imperial side fights a slow recovery campaign shaped by its Imperial Concern system and the challenge of transforming a complacent state into a functioning war machine. Scenario lengths range from compact eight-turn engagements to a huge 164-turn campaign, giving it considerable value for dedicated strategy players. The map-driven presentation and rule-focused pacing place it closer to classic computer wargames than grand strategy sandboxes such as Total War. It suits veterans of historical hex-and-counter-style strategy best, but patient newcomers with an interest in Chinese history can find a focused, unusually rare conflict to study and command.
