Combat plays out on carefully designed, turn-based tactical maps where positioning, cover, action points, and smart target selection matter as much as raw damage. You build a custom runner from archetypes such as decker, mage, rigger, or cybernetically enhanced fighter, then recruit a memorable team whose skills and personalities shape missions. Runs alternate between dialogue-heavy investigation, exploring atmospheric hubs, managing equipment and cyberware, and violent jobs where a bad opening move can leave a teammate exposed. Matrix sequences give hackers their own virtual battlefield, while summons, drones, grenades, and specialized weapons let squads approach encounters in very different ways; multiple difficulty settings keep the campaign approachable without making it shallow.

Hong Kong stands apart from earlier Shadowrun games through its richer character writing, especially the downtime conversations with crew members aboard your home base. The Extended Edition adds the substantial Shadows of Hong Kong follow-up campaign, developer commentary, visual refinements, and improved tools for community-made scenarios. Its isometric presentation may feel deliberately old-school, but the hand-painted environments and detailed portraits still sell the neon-noir atmosphere. Fans of XCOM’s measured combat, Baldur’s Gate-style party RPGs, or cyberpunk fiction with genuine occult flavor find plenty to enjoy, while newcomers can enter comfortably if they are willing to read, plan, and accept that bullets are rarely the only answer.
