Set during the turbulent Tenpō era, SHINOBI NON GRATA is a demanding 2D action-platformer built around fast kills, tighter reflexes, and wonderfully rough-edged pixel art. Kaina descends from the demon-hunting Fuuma clan, while the Oboro Ittō faction arms itself with supernatural allies under the command of Genba Kisaragi. The result feels less like a leisurely historical adventure and more like an old-school arcade gauntlet with a supernatural samurai-horror streak.

Murasame, Kaina’s sword, handles most close-range threats, but surviving the game’s crowded encounters means treating every ninja tool as part of the arsenal rather than an emergency button. Shuriken pick off enemies at range, the kusarigama helps control dangerous space, and weapons such as Elekiter offer stronger answers when opponents or boss patterns become overwhelming. Levels move through distinct hostile locations, including a forsaken shrine, ghost-haunted valleys, and a ninja mansion full of ambushes, traps, and enemies positioned to punish careless jumps. Progress comes from learning attack tells, using the right tool at the right moment, and steadily mastering the movement and combat rhythm instead of simply overpowering enemies.

Hyper-retro visuals give its sprites and backdrops the look of an unusually polished lost cartridge game, while the violent effects and grotesque demon designs keep the atmosphere sharp rather than nostalgic for nostalgia’s sake. Its seven weapon options add tactical variety without burying the player under complicated systems, and the boss fights act as concentrated tests of timing, positioning, and resource use. Difficulty is the central appeal: deaths teach lessons quickly, but the game expects precision and patience in return.
