SLACKJAW frames its nightmare through the lens of a fictional true-crime podcast, placing players in the role of the killer’s next captive and reconstructing the ordeal with a deliberately unsettling sense of realism. The mood is tense rather than action-heavy: every creak, distant footstep, and grim object in the room reinforces the fear of being discovered. It aims for the claustrophobic dread of a crime-scene thriller, not a monster-chasing carnival ride.

Survival depends on careful observation, resourceful puzzle-solving, and knowing when to make noise. Players search the basement for useful tools, inspect clues connected to the killer’s victims, and piece together routes toward escape while uncovering details that make the house feel increasingly hostile. Progress follows an escape-room structure, with environmental puzzles and locked barriers gradually revealing more of the setting’s ugly history. There is no indication of a combat power fantasy here; vulnerability is the point, and the pressure comes from solving problems under the constant possibility that Slackjaw may return from upstairs. Controller support makes it accessible on a couch setup, while its single-session format keeps the experience focused and avoids padding.

Unreal Engine 5 visuals give the confined spaces an uncomfortably tangible look, from stained surfaces to dimly lit corners where players hesitate before moving forward. The original score works with the sound design to sustain dread instead of relying solely on cheap jump scares, although players sensitive to realistic serial-killer subject matter should expect a grim tone throughout. Its short runtime and solo-developer scope make it closer to a polished horror vignette than a sprawling survival-horror campaign. Fans of escape-room games and first-person fright titles such as Layers of Fear or the slower, puzzle-driven stretches of Amnesia should find plenty to appreciate, especially if they want a concentrated evening of suspense.
