Wartime Italy becomes a sprawling hunting ground for long-range assassinations, sabotage, and tense escapes in Sniper Elite 4. Playing Allied marksman Karl Fairburne, you work with the Italian Resistance to undermine Fascist and Nazi forces before a dangerous new weapon can disrupt the Allied campaign. Sunlit villages, cliffside coastlines, forests, and immense military installations give the World War II setting a striking sense of place rather than reducing it to another grey battlefield. The mood balances cinematic espionage with deliberate, nerve-racking stealth, where a single well-placed round can change an entire mission.

Each large map functions as an open-ended combat sandbox filled with primary objectives, optional targets, collectibles, enemy outposts, and numerous routes to exploit. You scout patrol patterns with binoculars, mark threats, set traps, sneak through grass or occupied buildings, and line up shots while accounting for range, gravity, wind, and breathing. The series’ signature X-ray kill camera returns in gruesome detail, tracking bullets through bodies, weapons, and machinery when a shot lands cleanly. Difficulty settings let newcomers soften the ballistics and enemy awareness, while veterans can remove assists for a much harsher simulation-style challenge; cooperative campaign play, survival missions, competitive multiplayer, and the included DLC expand the package considerably.

What elevates Sniper Elite 4 above many stealth shooters is the freedom to turn almost any environment into a weapon. A silenced pistol and close-quarters stealth kill remain useful, but the best moments come from engineering chaos: masking rifle fire with aircraft or generators, detonating fuel tanks, shooting supports beneath enemies, or killing an officer from an absurd distance. Its broad levels feel closer to the tactical playgrounds of Hitman than a linear military campaign, though the shooting stays more accessible and explosive. Fans of stealth action, World War II campaigns, and methodical sniping should find plenty to enjoy, while players who want constant run-and-gun firefights may find its patient pacing less satisfying.
