Its presentation embraces pixel-art spacecraft, dramatic radio chatter, and the clean visual language of 1980s shoot-’em-ups, while Yuzo Koshiro’s energetic chiptune score gives every boss encounter extra momentum. The mood is proudly retro, but it is not content to simply repeat the past.

Piloting the Yamato means blasting through dense enemy waves, dodging patterned bullet spreads, collecting upgrades, and constantly deciding how its three component ships should connect. Amaterasu, Tsukuyomi, and Susano can dock in different orders, with each formation changing the ship’s main weapon, special attack, movement profile, and defensive options. A horizontal line may favor wide damage, while vertical arrangements and alternate lead ships create more focused firepower or entirely different offensive tools; splitting apart also helps navigate hazards and recover from danger.
