Soldier of Fortune: Platinum Edition is a hard-edged first-person campaign built around covert operations, real-world firearms, and an unapologetically violent presentation. Its atmosphere is grim, politically charged, and very much rooted in the action-movie sensibilities of its era.

Missions send you through 26 levels spread across five continents, where progress means clearing hostile territory, locating objectives, rescuing targets, and surviving ambushes from numerous armed opponents. Gunfights use a substantial selection of period-authentic weapons, from pistols and shotguns to assault rifles, sniper weapons, and explosives, with ammunition management and careful positioning often mattering more than simply charging ahead. The celebrated—and controversial—GHOUL damage system lets shots affect different areas of an enemy’s body, making weapon choice and accuracy feel unusually tangible for a classic FPS. Difficulty can be punishing, especially in crowded encounters, so saving frequently and approaching rooms with patience remains part of the intended experience.

What separates Soldier of Fortune from many Quake-era shooters is its attempt to pair arcade firefights with a more grounded mercenary fantasy: levels often reward scouting, choosing angles, and using the right tool for the job. Raven Software’s modified Quake II technology looks dated now, but its environments still carry a raw, industrial mood, while the mission variety prevents the campaign from becoming one endless corridor battle. The Platinum Edition is best approached as a historical action shooter rather than a modern tactical simulator, and some of its violence, stereotypes, and design conventions have aged poorly. Fans of SiN, Kingpin, early Call of Duty, or old-school PC shooters who value intense campaigns over polish should find plenty to enjoy, while newcomers should expect a demanding, distinctly retro ride.
