Manhattan becomes a quarantined battlefield when Venom’s symbiote outbreak turns civilians, gangs, and superheroes into potential threats. Spider-Man: Web of Shadows is a fast, rough-edged open-world action adventure built around the fantasy of swinging at full speed between skyscrapers before dropping straight into a street-level brawl. The story follows Peter Parker as he searches for Mary Jane while the infection spreads across New York, drawing in familiar figures such as Luke Cage, Wolverine, Black Cat, Moon Knight, and more. Its tone is darker than many Spider-Man adaptations, with entire districts shifting from ordinary city streets to alien-infested war zones.

Traversal is the main attraction: web-swinging feels loose, quick, and vertical, letting players chain swings, wall-running, dives, and rooftop landings without constantly stopping for missions. Combat switches on demand between the agile red suit, focused on acrobatics and web attacks, and the black symbiote suit, which hits harder with brutal tendrils, claws, and area attacks. Fights often spill into the air, where Spider-Man can launch enemies skyward and continue lengthy combos above the streets. Missions combine rescues, gang battles, boss encounters, infection-clearing objectives, and team-ups, while upgrades expand health, attacks, movement options, and suit-specific powers.

The standout feature is its choice system, which ties Peter’s red- or black-suit decisions to ally relationships, mission outcomes, and the story’s ending. Rather than presenting morality as a quiet dialogue menu, Web of Shadows lets the player express it through the combat style they rely on and the heroes or antiheroes they support. Its visuals and mission structure show their age, and the camera can struggle during crowded encounters, but the scale of the symbiote invasion still gives the city a memorable sense of escalation. Players who enjoy Spider-Man 2’s free movement, Prototype’s destructive superhero energy, or darker comic-book stories find plenty to like here, especially if they value combat variety over polished open-world side content.
