Kyle Katarn’s war against the Empire begins as a gritty, maze-like first-person shooter built around infiltration, sabotage, and scrappy Rebel operations. Set shortly before the events surrounding the original trilogy, STAR WARS: Dark Forces Remaster follows the former Imperial officer as he uncovers the Dark Trooper Project, a program capable of giving the Empire a terrifying new military advantage. Nightdive Studios preserves the 1995 campaign’s fourteen missions while rebuilding its presentation for modern hardware, with sharp textures, stronger lighting, atmospheric effects, and performance reaching 4K at 120 FPS. The result feels like a piece of early FPS history that still carries a distinct Star Wars mood: industrial corridors, hostile space stations, alien strongholds, and capital ships full of Imperial forces.

Missions combine rapid blaster fights with navigation-heavy objectives, environmental switches, keycard hunts, platforming, and occasional hidden routes. Katarn can jump, crouch, and crawl—more freedom than many shooters of its era provide—and his PDA keeps mission details, inventory, and maps close at hand when levels become deliberately tangled. Combat offers ten weapons ranging from basic fists and blasters to mines and thermal detonators, while shields, health supplies, ammunition, and weapon pickups encourage careful scavenging. Modern controller support adds gyro aiming, vibration, and a weapon wheel, though the campaign retains its old-school challenge: enemies hit hard, objectives can be cryptic, and saving often is wise.

What separates Dark Forces from its 1990s contemporaries is its commitment to believable locations rather than abstract shooting galleries; its levels feel designed as Imperial facilities with vents, elevators, control rooms, and secrets to uncover. The remaster improves readability without sanding away the original’s strange architecture, chunky enemy designs, and demanding pacing. Players who enjoy classic Doom-era shooters, Star Wars lore, and puzzle-heavy FPS campaigns find plenty to like, while newcomers should arrive prepared for less hand-holding than modern action games provide.
