Galactic conquest becomes a fast-moving campaign of fleet battles, planetary invasions, and familiar Star Wars power struggles in Star Wars Empire at War – Gold Pack. Set between Episodes III and IV, the strategy game lets you steer the Empire, the Rebel Alliance, or, through the Forces of Corruption expansion, the criminal Zann Consortium. Its tone is more accessible than a dense grand strategy title: battles begin quickly, heroes are immediately recognizable, and the Death Star is as terrifyingly decisive as it should be. Every captured world shifts the balance of power, turning the galaxy map into a persistent war rather than a string of disconnected missions.

Players manage credits, construct military facilities, recruit ground armies and space fleets, then move forces between planets to expand their influence. When hostile fleets meet, combat shifts to real-time space battles where X-wings, TIE Fighters, capital ships, and specialized heroes fight around a planet’s orbit; winning often opens the way for a ground assault below. Land engagements emphasize control points that unlock reinforcements and orbital support, while hero units such as Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Boba Fett bring powerful abilities and story flavor to the front line. The expansion adds corruption mechanics, black-market operations, bounty hunters, and an underworld faction built around sabotage and opportunism, giving its campaign a notably different rhythm from straightforward conquest.

What still makes Empire at War memorable is the seamless scale of its fantasy: dispatch a Star Destroyer across the map, win the orbital engagement, and deploy troops onto Tatooine without leaving the wider campaign. Petroglyph’s interface and unit AI show their age, and ground combat is less dramatic than the excellent space warfare, but the strategic loop remains satisfying. A remarkably active mod scene also keeps the game relevant, adding new eras, factions, maps, visual upgrades, and deeper campaigns. Fans of Command & Conquer-style RTS combat, Star Wars lore, or approachable galaxy-spanning strategy find plenty to enjoy, while veterans can easily lose hours rewriting the original trilogy’s conflict.
