What makes Rogue Squadron 3D endure is its focused mission design and convincing use of Star Wars hardware rather than open-ended space sim complexity. Battles take place above oceans, deserts, canyons, volcanic zones, and snowy fields, with the PC version’s lighting, smoke, tracer fire, and explosions giving its late-1990s presentation a welcome sense of spectacle. It is more comparable to the immediate, score-driven action of Star Fox 64 than to a detailed simulator such as X-Wing Alliance.
