The isometric viewpoint gives every room the feel of a clinical diorama, while the story leans hard into body horror, corporate cruelty, and the helpless dread of being trapped far beyond rescue. Its mood recalls the lonely terror of Alien and Event Horizon, filtered through the deliberate pace of a classic PC point-and-click.

John searches cabins, laboratories, maintenance shafts, and ship systems for clues, tools, and any route toward his family. Gameplay revolves around examining environments, collecting inventory objects, combining them into practical solutions, operating terminals, and using the ship’s machinery to overcome increasingly elaborate obstacles. Puzzles usually demand attention to notes, visual details, and the internal logic of the Groomlake rather than reflexes, although some situations carry lethal consequences and John can die in especially unpleasant ways. Conversations with the few surviving characters add context and occasionally open new paths, while the interface allows objects to be tested on the environment—or, darkly, on John himself.

The strongest feature is its commitment to atmosphere: densely painted 2D locations, disturbing sound design, and Mark Morgan’s ominous score make the ship feel oppressive even during quiet puzzle-solving stretches. STASIS does not chase modern action-horror pacing; it favors methodical investigation, inventory experimentation, and a steadily worsening narrative, so occasional trial-and-error is part of the intended experience. The Deluxe Edition suits players who value the extras surrounding a cult adventure, but the main draw remains the complete, bleak journey through the Groomlake. Fans of Sanitarium, The Dig, and classic-era adventure games with harsher horror imagery should find plenty to like, while newcomers need patience more than genre expertise.
