States of Power

A full World War II campaign no longer has to demand an entire weekend or a spreadsheet’s worth of preparation. States of Power is a grand-strategy wargame built around commanding a nation’s military, economy, and foreign policy in matches designed to reach a conclusion in a single session. Its tone sits between accessible map-based strategy and the ruthless brinkmanship of a competitive war game: borders shift quickly, alliances are temporary, and a poor decision can leave an army stranded or a country bankrupt. Players can lead an existing period-appropriate nation or build an entirely different historical, fictional, or fantastical conflict from the ground up.

Military command is direct, with players moving individual divisions and assembling forces from infantry, tanks, artillery, fighters, and other unit types. Battlefield success depends on counters, positioning, supply coverage, and knowing when a breakthrough is worth the risk of overstretching the front. Away from the map, provinces gain factories, ports, research facilities, and infrastructure while the national economy must balance civilian needs, construction, trade, loans, manpower, and military production. Technology progresses from early-war equipment toward devastating late-game weapons, while ideological choices can reform a state peacefully or ignite civil war; diplomacy adds pacts, guarantees, alliances, proxy interventions, and the ever-present possibility of betrayal.

The standout feature is its emphasis on getting meaningful decisions on screen quickly without stripping away the strategic layers veterans expect. A built-in Scenario Editor lets players redraw borders, establish countries, script events, and publish custom creations through the in-game browser, making alternate history and community-made worlds central rather than an afterthought. Multiplayer benefits from global and private messaging, turning negotiation into a real weapon instead of a menu function. States of Power suits newcomers intimidated by the density of Hearts of Iron-style games, but its logistics, economic balancing, unit composition, and cutthroat diplomacy give experienced grand-strategy players plenty to master.
