Stranglehold

Hong Kong gunplay gets the full John Woo treatment in this cinematic third-person shooter, where every restaurant table, railing, and market stall becomes part of an improvised action sequence. Chow Yun-Fat reprises his Hard Boiled role as Inspector Tequila, a hard-edged cop crossing Hong Kong and Chicago after his daughter is taken by criminal syndicates. The story is pure heroic-bloodshed melodrama: corrupt gangsters, family stakes, and an absurdly high body count delivered with a knowingly stylish, explosive tone. Rather than aiming for tactical realism, Stranglehold makes every firefight feel like the climax of a late-’80s action movie.

Tequila moves through largely linear levels, clearing rooms of enemies while using the environment for cover, acrobatics, and destruction. Players can slide across counters, swing from chandeliers, run along banisters, leap over obstacles, and fire in multiple directions, earning style points for aggressive, creative kills. Those points fuel signature abilities, including Tequila Time, which slows opponents without slowing Tequila, and powerful special attacks such as the Tequila Bomb. Destructible scenery is central to the loop, so gunfire shreds furniture, glass, signs, and cover, often forcing both sides to keep moving rather than camping behind safety. The campaign stays focused on solo action, while its legacy online features are largely dependent on whether modern platform services remain available.

What separates Stranglehold from most cover shooters is its commitment to momentum and spectacle over precision tactics. The physics-heavy environments and stunt system encourage players to treat arenas like movie sets, constantly looking for a more dramatic route through the next wave of enemies. Its technology and controls show their age, and the story is more B-movie melodrama than detective drama, but the game still has a distinctive identity that modern shooters rarely match. Fans of Max Payne’s slow-motion firefights, Kane & Lynch’s grimy crime atmosphere, or John Woo’s Hard Boiled should find plenty to enjoy, especially if they want a compact, arcade-like action classic rather than an open-world commitment.
