Streets of Red: Devil’s Dare Deluxe is a horror-flavored side-scrolling beat ’em up that blends the chunky immediacy of 16-bit brawlers with roguelike consequences. Its tone is gleefully gory rather than genuinely oppressive, packing slasher-film set pieces, dark comedy, and bright pixel-art violence into an old-school coin-op framework. The central joke has teeth: death is never merely a restart when your accumulated progress can vanish with your character.

Players choose from six distinct survivors, each built around different attacks, special abilities, and upgrade paths, then punch, slash, shoot, and dodge through undead-packed stages. Defeated enemies drop cash, and that money creates the run’s key tension: spend it immediately on stronger skills and health, or keep enough in reserve to buy a revival after a fatal mistake. Branching routes lead toward different environments and bosses, while the changing selection of levels keeps repeated attempts from feeling identical. Combat is simple enough for anyone to grasp quickly, but crowd management, timing, resource decisions, and character-specific combos reward players who learn how to survive without burning through every dollar.

Local co-op supports up to four players, with difficulty adjusting to the size of the group, making it equally suitable for chaotic couch sessions and determined solo attempts. Unlike many modern roguelites, its persistence is intentionally harsh: failing without the means to revive can wipe the save, restoring the high-stakes pressure of feeding coins into an arcade cabinet. The horror-and-gaming crossover gives the stages more personality than a standard street brawler, while the permadeath economy makes every enemy encounter matter.
