STRIDER

Kazakh City in 2048 is a hostile, neon-lit fortress ruled by the tyrannical Grandmaster Meio, and only elite assassin Hiryu can cut through its defenses. STRIDER revives Capcom’s classic arcade hero as a fast, aggressive side-scrolling action adventure with a modern interconnected-world structure. The mood is sleek and pulpy rather than grim, mixing futuristic military hardware, giant mechanical bosses, and ninja acrobatics into a relentless power fantasy. Hiryu’s signature Cypher blade makes every encounter feel immediate, rewarding players who stay mobile and strike before enemies can surround them.

Combat revolves around rapid slashes, aerial attacks, wall climbing, sliding, and evasive movement, with Hiryu able to tear through rooms at remarkable speed once the controls click. Exploration gradually opens as new tools and Cypher upgrades grant access to previously unreachable routes, turning the city into a compact Metroidvania full of alternate paths, collectibles, and hidden upgrades. Different Cypher variants add elemental effects that help against particular enemies and environmental obstacles, while powerful special attacks clear space during crowded fights. Boss battles provide the main difficulty spikes, demanding pattern recognition and disciplined positioning rather than simple button mashing, though adjustable challenge settings make the campaign approachable.

What separates STRIDER from slower exploration-driven Metroidvanias is its momentum: traversal feels closer to an arcade action game, and backtracking rarely drags because Hiryu moves so quickly. Its stylized 3D environments preserve the spirit of the original’s bold sci-fi imagery while allowing the map to fold in on itself through towers, laboratories, frozen districts, and enemy strongholds. The campaign is fairly concise, but higher difficulties, collectible hunting, and score-focused mastery give action fans reasons to return. Players who enjoy the speed of Ninja Gaiden, the map progression of Metroid, or Capcom’s classic arcade energy find plenty to like here, especially if they want a polished single-player challenge without excessive complexity.
