Stronghold 2: Steam Edition (v1.5)

Game Overview

Medieval rule is as much about keeping peasants fed as it is about crushing an enemy castle beneath a storm of arrows. Stronghold 2: Steam Edition blends real-time strategy, city management, and siege warfare in a grimy, lived-in version of the Middle Ages where every farm, tavern, prison, and gallows affects the stability of your realm. One moment you are laying out a productive castle town; the next, you are dealing with rats, crime, disease, fires, and a hostile lord marching siege engines toward your walls. Its tone sits between a detailed historical sandbox and the satisfying chaos of a classic RTS.

Success begins with building an economy that turns raw resources into food, weapons, ale, clothing, and popular support. You place work structures, manage taxes and rations, assign soldiers, and shape defenses with curtain walls, gatehouses, towers, moats, and lethal battlements. Combat centers on familiar Stronghold tools such as archers, crossbowmen, knights, ladders, catapults, and trebuchets, with attackers attempting to breach carefully designed fortifications while defenders exploit height and chokepoints. Story campaigns and standalone skirmishes provide different ways to play, while the game’s layered systems make even a quiet settlement feel vulnerable if its people become unhappy or lawless.

Castle life is the feature that gives Stronghold 2 its identity. Rather than treating villagers as anonymous resource gatherers, it makes their routines and needs visible: peasants drink in inns, visit churches, get arrested, face punishment, and react to the quality of their lordship. The fully 3D presentation gives siege assaults more spectacle than the earlier games, even if the interface and pathfinding show their age. Fans of Age of Empires, The Settlers, or the original Stronghold who enjoy designing practical castles will find plenty to work with, while newcomers should expect a demanding economy and occasional old-school rough edges.
