Players command Crusader or Arabic forces through a conflict inspired by the late twelfth-century struggle for the Holy Land, taking the roles of figures including Richard the Lionheart and the Sultan. Its strongest quality is the constant tension between building a functioning town and preparing for an attack that can arrive before your economy is ready. Rather than presenting warfare as abstract unit blobs, the game makes you think about wall shapes, tower placement, chokepoints, firepower, and whether peasants can actually reach the resources you demand. The 3D presentation and physics-driven destruction modernize the formula, although its controls and production chains still favor patience over convenience.
