Combat revolves around positioning archers on battlements, breaking gates with trebuchets and siege weapons, and exploiting magical attacks that can devastate tightly packed forces or breach entrenched positions. Beyond the campaigns, skirmish scenarios allow battles against AI rulers, while online matches support up to four competitors across economic, territorial, and direct-combat modes.

The standout attraction is the way familiar Stronghold logistics collide with ridiculous but satisfying fantasy tools: a dragon can roast an army, werewolves can be launched into a fortress, and ice giants can smash through defenses that would stop ordinary soldiers.
