Stubbs the Zombie in Rebel Without a Pulse

Punchbowl looks like a glossy 1950s vision of tomorrow, all chrome towers, flying cars, and cheerful citizens who are about to become lunch. Stubbs is an undead former salesman with a grudge, and his revenge story turns a retro-futurist city into a gleefully messy zombie uprising. The tone is deliberately absurd rather than frightening, mixing old monster-movie energy with slapstick gore, one-liners, and a surprisingly sincere thread of lost love. Playing as the monster gives the familiar zombie apocalypse fantasy a welcome reversal: humanity is not being saved here.

Stubbs shambles through linear city districts, military facilities, farms, and suburbs, tearing apart police officers, soldiers, robots, and anyone else trying to halt his rampage. Biting enemies restores health and converts victims into loyal undead followers, allowing a small attack to snowball into a crowd that overwhelms armed resistance. His decomposing body doubles as an arsenal: throw explosive organs, spit incapacitating bile, unleash a noxious gas cloud, or detach a crawling hand to slip through vents and possess living people. Possession is especially useful because it lets Stubbs operate machinery, open paths, and turn human weapons on their own forces, while environmental obstacles and locked doors add light puzzle-solving between brawls.

What makes the adventure memorable is its commitment to the central joke: Stubbs is slow, ugly, and gross, but he is also an unusually versatile action hero. The Halo-engine foundation gives Punchbowl broad streets and busy combat spaces, while its stylized period design and cover-heavy soundtrack create a personality few zombie games match. Age shows in the straightforward mission structure, occasional clunky targeting, and limited challenge compared with modern action games, but the short campaign rarely outstays its premise. Fans of Destroy All Humans!, oddball cult classics, and comedic undead carnage find plenty to enjoy, especially if they value imagination and atmosphere over polished modern combat.
