What separates Subnautica from many open-world crafting games is its meticulously layered map: every new biome feels like a breathtaking reward and a potential deathtrap. The lack of traditional weapons makes encounters with leviathans especially memorable, since escaping, outsmarting, or avoiding predators usually matters more than defeating them. Its hand-crafted world and focused narrative give the experience a stronger sense of direction than a typical sandbox, even though players retain plenty of freedom in how they build and explore.
