A dying empire, squabbling noble houses, and the aftermath of a magical apocalypse form the harsh foundation of The Age of Decadence. This is a deliberately old-school computer RPG that trades heroic power fantasy for political maneuvering, desperate survival, and consequences that rarely feel clean. Its low-fantasy world draws heavily from Roman history rather than standard elves-and-orcs conventions, giving every ruined city, merchant guild, and military outpost a distinct sense of decay. The tone is unforgiving, intelligent, and often cynical: you are not destined to save the world, only to find a place within its collapse.

Character creation determines far more than combat ability, as backgrounds such as mercenary, assassin, merchant, drifter, and loremaster open radically different routes through the campaign. Dialogue relies on skills, reputation, attributes, and faction allegiance, letting a silver-tongued trader bypass battles that a hardened fighter must win with steel. Combat uses demanding turn-based tactical encounters where positioning, weapon reach, armor penetration, aimed attacks, and action-point management matter; poor builds can make direct confrontation brutally difficult. Quests branch constantly, with betrayals, alliances, failed negotiations, and permanent outcomes encouraging players to accept that not every problem has a perfect solution.

What separates it from most RPGs is its willingness to lock away content based on your decisions instead of letting one all-purpose hero see everything in a single run. A noncombat specialist can uncover ancient secrets, manipulate rival powers, and complete major story paths with little fighting, while a skilled warrior experiences a far bloodier version of the same world. The isometric presentation and dense writing evoke classic titles such as Fallout, Arcanum, and Planescape: Torment, though its combat is more methodical and its systems less forgiving than any of them. The Age of Decadence suits veterans who enjoy replaying games with specialized characters and living with harsh consequences, but newcomers expecting casual exploration or constant action should approach it patiently.
