Hubert McCubert is a tiny blue cube with one modest ambition: surviving long enough to enjoy some peace and quiet. That proves difficult when the Crimson Cube Posse locks onto him and turns every screen into a frantic pursuit puzzle. The Ancient Art of Staying Alive is a deliberately stripped-back arcade action game built around fast decisions, tight movement, and the constant danger of being boxed in. Its retro presentation is proudly basic, but the tension of a crowded arena and a single bad move gives it a sharp, old-school edge.

Each round asks you to guide Hubert around enemies that relentlessly home in on his position, baiting them into collisions or steering through openings before the trap closes. The underlying idea recalls classic Daleks-style survival games, but real-time play makes every escape route more demanding and immediate. Teleporters, bombs, and placed obstacles offer lifesaving options when the screen gets crowded, although leaning on those tools reduces your score. Twenty levels, five speed settings, an optional always-moving player rule, and a full Challenge Mode provide a solid range of difficulty, while boss stages interrupt longer runs at regular intervals.

Randomized enemy layouts keep short sessions from becoming rote, making it an easy game to return to when you want a quick score-chasing challenge rather than a long campaign. Turn-based mode changes the rhythm substantially, allowing players to study enemy movement and approach the same survival puzzles with more deliberate planning. Custom background colors and the high-score table reinforce its knowingly ancient-console aesthetic instead of trying to disguise its minimalism.
