The Banished Vault is a deliberately harsh run-based strategy game where survival depends less on firepower than on foresight, logistics, and accepting that every expedition may cost lives. Its universe feels lonely, solemn, and unforgiving, mixing hard-science orbital planning with the ritualistic atmosphere of a decaying religious order. The goal is not conquest: it is to preserve enough of the Vault’s people and knowledge to send their story back home before the Gloom closes in.

Each run sends a small crew of exiles through procedurally assembled systems represented as readable, board-game-like energy maps. Players plot ship routes, establish orbital or surface outposts, harvest scarce materials, and physically transport those resources where they are needed rather than drawing from an abstract shared inventory. Fuel, engine performance, travel windows, available space, environmental hazards, and crew placement all matter, giving even a simple delivery mission real strategic weight. Between systems, long periods of hibernation allow exiles to study recovered artifacts, develop abilities, and unlock new construction options, while dice-driven tests introduce dangerous uncertainty during exploration and crises. Death is permanent, abandonment is sometimes unavoidable, and a run ends if only one exile remains.

What separates it from conventional colony builders is its commitment to constrained space logistics and irreversible choices. The solar-system travel model is simplified enough to learn but demanding enough to punish careless burns, making it closer to a thoughtful tabletop campaign than a fast-paced management sim. Hand-drawn illustrations, stark interface design, and a dense in-universe manual reinforce the feeling of operating an ancient sacred machine at the edge of extinction. Fans of FTL’s desperate run management, The Banner Saga’s painful decisions, or hard logistical strategy will find plenty to admire, though newcomers should expect a steep learning curve and a willingness to learn through failure.
