A guided walk through unfinished, strange, and often deeply lonely game spaces, this is less a conventional adventure than a conversation about creativity, interpretation, and the distance between an artist and their audience. Davey Wreden, known for The Stanley Parable, narrates the experience as he presents a collection of short games supposedly made by an elusive designer named Coda. Their worlds range from bare prison corridors to impossible architectural puzzles and bleak machine-filled landscapes, each carrying an uneasy mood beneath its deliberately simple presentation. The Beginner’s Guide feels intimate, funny in flashes, and increasingly uncomfortable as its narrator’s certainty begins to invite questions.

Movement and observation form the entire interaction: players walk through each exhibit, listen to commentary, inspect environments, and occasionally follow altered paths when the narrator intervenes. There are no enemies to defeat, inventories to manage, or fail states to overcome, although several of Coda’s creations mimic puzzle-game logic and use locked doors, mazes, platforms, and abstract obstacles to communicate ideas. The roughly 90-minute journey progresses in a fixed order, making it closer to a playable essay or theatrical monologue than a sandbox. Its lack of traditional challenge is intentional, putting the focus on how games can express frustration, isolation, ambition, and the uncomfortable urge to assign meaning to someone else’s work.

What makes it memorable is the way it uses level design as storytelling rather than merely as scenery. Every rough texture, repeated hallway, inaccessible area, and awkward mechanical experiment contributes to the narration’s larger themes without requiring a long list of lore entries or exposition. Fans of The Stanley Parable, Gone Home, Dear Esther, or other reflective first-person narrative games will recognize the interest in player expectation, but Wreden’s work is more personal and less interested in providing clean answers. It suits players who value thought-provoking stories over action, and it remains especially effective for anyone curious about the emotional pressures behind making art.
