The Caligula Effect 2 is a stylish, introspective Japanese RPG built around students who awaken to the artificial nature of their supposedly regret-free world. As a new member of the Go-Home Club, you gather fellow outsiders, confront the musicians enforcing Redo’s illusion, and fight for the right to return to an imperfect reality. Its tone mixes colourful anime absurdity with surprisingly heavy themes of identity, trauma, denial, and the comfort of living behind a mask.

Combat uses the returning Imaginary Chain system, letting you preview several seconds of enemy and ally actions before committing to a sequence. Rather than merely selecting an attack and hoping for the best, you plan positioning, launch opponents into allies’ strikes, interrupt dangerous skills, and build elaborate chains that resemble a turn-based fighting game. Exploration takes you through warped school districts, shopping areas, and surreal digital spaces filled with optional conversations and side quests. Party members grow through equipment, passive abilities, weapon skills, character stories, and relationship-focused Wire interactions, while difficulty settings make the campaign approachable for genre newcomers without removing its tactical depth.

What separates it from most school-based JRPGs is its willingness to make every major character uncomfortable, flawed, and occasionally difficult to support. The soundtrack is central rather than decorative: rival musicians’ songs shape the atmosphere, boss encounters, and identity of Redo itself, giving the adventure a strong rhythm-game-adjacent energy. Its dungeon layouts can become repetitive, and the presentation is less lavish than Persona, but the combat offers more active planning than many traditional turn-based RPGs. Fans of Persona, The World Ends with You, and character-driven anime RPGs who want a darker, stranger story with inventive battle systems find plenty to enjoy, especially with the included DLC adding extra cosmetic and bonus content.
