Guybrush Threepwood’s latest attempt at romance turns into a pirate disaster when a cursed engagement ring transforms Elaine Marley into solid gold. The Curse of Monkey Island is a lavishly animated point-and-click adventure that sends the famously incompetent pirate across the Caribbean in search of a cure, while his undead enemy LeChuck schemes in the background. Its islands are packed with carnival-sized contraptions, suspicious sailors, smugglers, cannibals, and jokes that cheerfully undercut every moment of swashbuckling danger. The mood remains playful and cartoonish, even when the stakes involve curses, ghost pirates, and an inconvenient prophecy about Guybrush dying.

Most of the adventure revolves around talking to eccentric characters, gathering bizarre inventory items, and combining them to solve layered environmental puzzles. A streamlined context-sensitive interaction wheel replaces the older games’ long list of commands, making it easier to inspect, use, talk to, and pick up objects without losing the classic LucasArts feel. Progress often depends on paying attention to dialogue, revisiting locations with new tools, and thinking laterally rather than mechanically; solutions can involve anything from insult swordfighting to winning a banjo duel or arranging a bizarre stage performance. Failure is rarely punishing, and the game avoids the dead ends and sudden deaths common to many adventure games of its era, though several puzzles still demand patience and a willingness to experiment.

Hand-drawn animation, expressive voice acting, and Michael Land’s lively score give the game an energy that still holds up far better than many 1990s adventures. Guybrush’s fourth-wall-adjacent sarcasm and the sharp supporting cast make every detour feel worthwhile, while the large three-act structure delivers a satisfying tour of Monkey Island’s most memorable locales. Compared with later adventure games, its logic can occasionally feel delightfully absurd, but that absurdity is precisely the point. Fans of Day of the Tentacle, Sam & Max, or modern narrative puzzlers such as Return to Monkey Island find a funny, approachable classic here, while veterans get one of the series’ most polished and visually distinctive entries.
