The Dead Tree of Ranchiuna (v2022.10.31)

An empty childhood village becomes the stage for a compact, unsettling mystery shaped by grief, memory, and social cruelty. The Dead Tree of Ranchiuna follows a university graduate returning home only to find its streets abandoned and its past refusing to stay buried. Visions pull him across different moments in the village’s history, revealing another visitor’s doomed return alongside fragments of a tragedy he did not witness himself. Its mood is mournful rather than conventionally terrifying, using surreal imagery and grounded human pain to create a somber adventure.

Most of the experience revolves around walking the large village map, examining locations, following narrative leads, and piecing together what happened through voiced scenes and environmental details. Light puzzles and occasional platforming break up the exploration without turning the game into a demanding brain-teaser or action challenge. Players can switch freely between first- and third-person views, which is useful both for appreciating the scenery and navigating particular spaces. The initial story runs for a few hours, while attentive exploration uncovers extra conversations and context; finishing the main narrative also unlocks fast travel for easier revisits.

Ranchiuna’s strongest asset is its willingness to tell a supernatural story without losing sight of its human subject matter. The fantasy elements often feel symbolic, reflecting prejudice, injustice, trauma, and the ways a community can fail the people within it. A seamless map, full voice work, reflective narration, and Molo Dimolo’s original score give the game more atmosphere than its modest scope might suggest. Fans of narrative walking simulators such as What Remains of Edith Finch, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, or Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture should find plenty to appreciate, especially if they prefer story and mood over difficult puzzles or combat.
