Its tone balances high-fantasy heroics with Bethesda’s signature chaos: a stolen horse can lead to a prison break, a haunted house, or an accidental fight with the local guard. The Game of the Year Edition also bundles two substantial expansions, making the adventure feel even broader.

Character building is wonderfully open-ended, letting you create a sword-and-shield knight, stealthy thief, destructive mage, silver-tongued diplomat, or an eccentric hybrid with talents that develop through use. Combat plays from first or third person, mixing melee weapons, shields, bows, spells, summons, poisons, and enchanted equipment, while questing feeds a steady cycle of exploration, loot, training, and stronger threats. Major faction storylines for the Dark Brotherhood, Thieves Guild, Mages Guild, and Fighters Guild provide some of the most memorable missions, often rivaling the main campaign. Difficulty can be adjusted at any time, and the PC version benefits greatly from a huge modding community that can modernize visuals, rebalance systems, add quests, or preserve its original 2006 character.

What still distinguishes Oblivion is the unpredictability of its simulation-driven world, where citizens keep schedules, wander off, argue, steal food, and occasionally create absurd scenes no scripted RPG could plan. Shivering Isles is especially essential, transporting you to Sheogorath’s surreal realm of Mania and Dementia for stranger landscapes, new enemies, and a standout expansion storyline, while Knights of the Nine offers a more traditional holy crusade.
