Camina Drummer takes command of a battered scavenger ship in a tense prequel set before her better-known role in The Expanse television series. As captain of the Artemis, she leads a small crew through the politically charged, resource-starved reaches of the Belt, where derelict vessels promise valuable salvage and every encounter can turn violent. The mood is hard-edged and intimate rather than galaxy-spanning: cramped corridors, fragile alliances, and the constant threat of vacuum make space feel hostile. Cara Gee returns as Drummer, giving the story the same fierce, uncompromising presence that makes the character a fan favorite.

The setting also benefits from The Expanse’s grounded science-fiction identity: ships feel industrial, Belter culture carries real weight, and danger comes from people as often as weapons. Choices create a convincing sense of ownership over Drummer’s leadership, even when the overarching plot remains tightly authored.
