The Lord of the Rings: War in the North

Middle-earth’s northern front becomes a colder, bloodier battlefield in this co-op action RPG, far from the Fellowship’s better-known road to Mordor. The story follows three new heroes—a Dúnedain ranger, a dwarf warrior, and an elven lore-master—as they attempt to disrupt an invading force serving Sauron in Eriador. Orcs, trolls, wights, goblins, and other familiar threats make the conflict feel harsher than the usual high-fantasy adventure, with severed limbs and heavy melee blows giving battles a grim physicality. It is a campaign about holding the line in places the central Lord of the Rings story only briefly acknowledges.

Players select one of the three classes, each with distinct weapons, skills, and party duties. Eradan combines swordplay, bows, and stealth; Farin absorbs punishment with shields and axes; Andriel controls fights through staffs, elemental magic, and support abilities. Combat plays in real time and rewards active blocking, dodging, ranged attacks, reviving fallen allies, and coordinating specials when enemies overwhelm the group. Quests supply weapons, armor, runes, consumables, and crafting materials, while experience points unlock class-specific abilities and let heroes develop toward damage, defense, healing, or utility roles. The adventure is structured around connected levels and hubs rather than a true open world, but optional objectives and loot hunting add reasons to revisit areas.

War in the North stands out by treating Tolkien’s setting as a party-based dungeon crawler instead of an enormous sandbox. Three-player co-op is its strongest feature, since a balanced fellowship makes boss encounters, enemy swarms, and rescue moments far more satisfying than playing alongside AI companions. Its original northern storyline gives longtime fans fresh territory while still delivering recognisable locations, creatures, and the atmosphere of the films. Fans of action RPGs such as Diablo or classic co-op brawlers, especially players who want a darker Lord of the Rings campaign with friends, find the most to enjoy here; solo players can still finish it, but the fellowship dynamic is the real draw.
