The Medium

A haunted Polish resort becomes the stage for a slow-burning investigation into grief, abuse, and supernatural trauma. You play Marianne, a woman able to perceive both the physical world and a decaying spirit realm, after a mysterious caller draws her toward the abandoned Niwa Hotel. The Medium delivers psychological horror rather than constant jump scares, using oppressive silence, grim industrial spaces, and an unsettling score from Arkadiusz Reikowski and Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka. Its story leans heavily into mature themes, creating a bleak, mournful atmosphere that stays focused on personal tragedy instead of cheap shocks.

Marianne investigates environments in third-person, searching rooms for clues, examining objects, and piecing together memories left behind by the dead. The defining feature is its simultaneous-world system: at key moments, the screen divides to show Marianne moving through reality and the spirit plane at once, forcing you to solve puzzles by using actions or routes available in only one dimension. Her abilities include out-of-body exploration, spirit shields, energy bursts, and heightened senses that reveal hidden paths and emotional echoes. Encounters with the Maw, a relentless spectral predator, shift the pace toward tense evasion and stealth, since Marianne cannot simply fight her way past danger.

Fixed camera angles and deliberate movement give the game a distinctly old-school survival-horror feel, though its puzzle structure is generally more guided than a classic Resident Evil labyrinth. The dual-reality sequences are more than a visual trick, turning spatial problem-solving into the game’s strongest and most memorable idea. Expect a focused, story-led campaign rather than deep combat systems, branching choices, or major replay incentives; the appeal lies in uncovering its secrets and absorbing its carefully constructed mood. Fans of Silent Hill, Observer, and narrative horror games with atmosphere over action should find plenty to appreciate, while newcomers should know that its pacing is patient and its subject matter is unusually grim.
