Characters are defined by health, loyalty, satiety, and a set of five personal traits that affect their capabilities and potential assignments; items can alter a trait, creating new combinations but never removing the risk attached to your decisions. Hunger matters because adequate satiety helps preserve health and loyalty, while either of the latter reaching zero means losing that character permanently. You field up to three martial retainers in turn-based battles and as many as nine scholarly guards in separate debate encounters, making party composition relevant in both physical and rhetorical conflicts. Outside combat, the central loop revolves around gaining control of official posts through appointments, impeachment, bribery, assassination, and careful preparation of trusted candidates for newly vacant positions.

Its strongest idea is the fusion of personnel management with political maneuvering: offices are not abstract upgrades, but contested seats that must be emptied, filled, and defended. The goal of controlling the Household Department gives the campaign a tangible bureaucratic endgame, while the many troubled citizens and competing forces lend choices a human cost.
