Rather than relying on jump scares alone, it builds unease through decaying neighborhoods, drowned streets, cult activity, and the persistent sense that reality is slipping. The Unreal Engine 5 upgrade sharpens that atmosphere with richer lighting, detailed surfaces, HDR support, and a moodier version of its already memorable setting.

Cases form the heart of the experience: players examine crime scenes, question suspects, consult archives, connect evidence in a mental reconstruction system, and decide which leads deserve trust. Oakmont is freely navigable on foot and by boat, with diving-suit excursions opening routes beneath the water, while firearms from the era offer rough, limited protection against monsters. Combat remains deliberately weighty rather than slick, and ammunition, healing supplies, and sanity management keep investigations tense when a routine search becomes a creature encounter. Multiple solutions and morally uncertain decisions can alter case outcomes, encouraging a second playthrough instead of presenting every mystery as a single correct path.

What separates it from more linear horror adventures is its willingness to make deduction imperfect; evidence can point in conflicting directions, and acting on bad information can have consequences. The remaster also improves controls, balancing, tutorials, crowds, visual performance options such as DLSS and FSR, and includes the additional DLC content for a fuller visit to Oakmont. Its open-world structure can occasionally feel more functional than lively, and action is less refined than its investigation systems, but the city’s atmosphere carries it through. Fans of Call of Cthulhu, Sherlock Holmes-style clue work, and slower psychological horror find far more to enjoy here than players seeking constant action.
