Them Bombs

A ticking device, a cluttered console, and a room full of increasingly panicked voices are all Them Bombs needs to turn a simple party session into a pressure-cooker. This cooperative puzzle game casts one player as the person physically handling the bomb, while two to four others serve as remote experts with the instructions needed to keep everyone alive. Nobody has the full picture, so success depends less on fast reflexes than on clear descriptions, careful listening, and staying calm when the timer gets ugly. The tone is playful and cartoonish, but the tension between each beep is very real.

The Hero operates the PC and examines wires, symbols, switches, dials, and other bomb modules, then explains exactly what appears on screen to the Expert Team. Experts consult a separate defusal manual and translate its deliberately awkward rules into instructions the Hero can follow, often while juggling several problems at once. Each scenario turns into a communication loop: identify the module, describe its details, interpret the manual, make a decision, and hope an incorrect input does not cost valuable time. Sessions work especially well locally with phones, tablets, or printed manual pages for the experts, and the game supports remote play too as long as everyone can talk through voice chat.

What separates Them Bombs from many co-op games is how completely it makes conversation the main mechanic. Its puzzles are not about obscure technical knowledge; they test whether your group can communicate positions, colors, patterns, and directions without talking over one another. The accessible controls and bright presentation make it easy to introduce at parties, while the escalating complexity gives experienced groups reasons to retry and improve.
