Kou Tokisaka begins as a regular student, but a chance encounter with the Eclipse—a hostile dimension filled with warped creatures—pulls him into the ranks of the Wielders. The tone moves comfortably between friendly school-life scenes, local mysteries, and surprisingly urgent dungeon expeditions. Falcom’s knack for character-driven storytelling keeps the long adventure grounded even as its stakes grow far beyond one city.

Most of the game alternates between roaming Morimiya, speaking with classmates, accepting optional jobs, shopping, and entering Eclipse dungeons to clear the threats behind strange incidents. Combat is real-time and approachable: each party member has a distinct weapon style, elemental affinities matter against enemy defenses, and quick movement, dodges, combos, and special attacks make encounters feel closer to Ys than to a turn-based JRPG. Dungeon runs reward careful exploration with treasure, upgrades, collectibles, and materials, while equipment and character progression steadily expand the team’s options. Building bonds through side events is more than flavor, since stronger connections provide useful benefits and make the ensemble’s personal stories land more effectively.

What separates eX+ from the original release is the amount of extra material wrapped around an already substantial campaign. New character episodes reveal perspectives absent from the central plot, White Shroud becomes playable in a separate adventure, and postgame content adds another reason to return after the credits. The enhanced edition also supports 60 FPS play and includes Time Attack and Boss Rush challenges for players who want to master patterns rather than simply finish the story. Its city structure and social downtime invite Persona comparisons, but the brisk action combat and compact dungeon design give it a more direct, arcade-like pace. Anyone wanting an accessible anime action RPG with plenty of dialogue, side activities, and satisfying boss fights should find a lot to enjoy, while Falcom veterans will recognize the studio’s familiar strength for lovable parties and escalating supernatural intrigue.
