Lara Croft’s first expedition returns as a polished 2007 remake that preserves the lonely, dangerous spirit of the original while giving it the mobility and presentation of the Legend era. The hunt for the mythical Scion carries her from Peruvian ruins to Egyptian tombs and the lost remnants of Atlantis, with each location built around monumental architecture, ancient traps, and a strong sense of isolation. Adventure takes priority over constant spectacle: long stretches of quiet platforming make every predator attack, collapsing floor, and supernatural reveal feel more dramatic. Its tone balances pulpy archaeological adventure with eerie mystery, especially once the journey reaches its stranger late-game ruins.

Most of the action revolves around reading environments, plotting routes across huge chambers, and using Lara’s expanded acrobatic moveset to survive them. She wall-runs, swings from grapples, balances along narrow ledges, climbs handholds, dives through waterlogged passages, and often has to react quickly when platforms crumble beneath her. Puzzles range from moving blocks and pressure plates to elaborate mechanisms that demand careful observation, while the optional relics and artifacts reward players who inspect side paths rather than rushing onward. Combat uses Lara’s familiar dual pistols against wolves, bears, big cats, bats, and more exotic threats; the dodge-and-counter system adds a more tactical rhythm than simply circling enemies and firing. Checkpoints soften the punishment of difficult jumps, though some precision-platforming sequences and boss encounters still demand patience.

Anniversary stands out because it treats tombs as convincing places rather than brief corridors between firefights. Its oversized rooms frequently loop back on themselves, revealing fresh angles and routes as switches alter the environment, and the level design remains a masterclass in making traversal feel like archaeology. The camera and controls occasionally show their age, particularly during demanding jumps, but the focused single-player campaign avoids needless filler and maintains a satisfying sense of discovery. Fans of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Indiana Jones-style ruins, or modern Tomb Raider’s exploration side will find a rewarding classic here, while newcomers should expect a more puzzle-heavy and less cinematic adventure than Lara’s recent reboots.
