Tomb Raider: Underworld

Lara Croft’s search for answers about her missing mother takes her through a globe-spanning chain of ruins shaped by Norse myth, from Mediterranean waters to Thai temples, Mexican jungles, and Arctic ice. Tomb Raider: Underworld is a moody action-adventure built around the pleasure of reaching places that initially look impossible: a crumbling ledge, a flooded chamber, or a temple mechanism hidden above the player’s eyeline. Its isolated tombs feel less like combat arenas than dangerous archaeological playgrounds, with ancient machines, wildlife, mercenaries, and spectacular environmental hazards keeping the expedition tense. The tone is classic Lara—confident, mysterious, and pulpy—but the ruins often carry a colder, more foreboding atmosphere than the series’ lighter entries.

Most of the adventure revolves around platforming, observation, and deciphering how each location fits together. Lara climbs, swings, wall-runs, rappels, and uses her grapple to pull objects, open routes, and cross huge gaps, while the camera and movement demand careful timing around narrow footholds. Large puzzle rooms ask players to manipulate weights, gears, statues, fire, water, and physics-driven objects, usually offering several ways to inspect the environment before committing to a solution. Gunfights use Lara’s twin pistols alongside stronger weapons, with the ability to aim at separate foes and fire while hanging from surfaces, though exploration remains the main attraction. Her sonar device helps reveal nearby geometry and hidden pickups, while the motorbike breaks up selected regions with rough terrain traversal.

Underworld stands out because its levels treat movement as a tool for investigation rather than simply a linear obstacle course. The climbing animation system gives Lara a convincing sense of physical contact with the world, even if occasional camera quirks and stiff combat show its age. Hidden relics and treasures reward thorough players, and the lengthy, interconnected tomb spaces make revisiting an area mentally satisfying. Fans of the Legend-era Tomb Raider games, Prince of Persia-style acrobatics, or puzzle-heavy action adventures will find plenty to enjoy, while newcomers should expect a more deliberate, old-school pace than modern cinematic reboots.
