Gensokyo’s familiar shrine maiden wakes with a blank past, a lost battle behind her, and a fresh run of supernatural incidents threatening the land she is supposed to protect. Touhou Genso Wanderer -FORESIGHT- turns that premise into a colorful, character-driven roguelike RPG, pairing Reimu Hakurei with Marisa and a large cast from Touhou Project. Its mood balances cute anime banter and expressive new portraits with the constant tension of entering a dungeon where a single mistake can derail an expedition. Even returning incidents carry uncertainty, since Reimu cannot remember how she solved them before.

Adventure unfolds on grid-based, turn-driven dungeon floors whose rooms, corridors, enemy placements, and loot change every visit. Moving, attacking, using items, and managing equipment all demand careful positioning; enemies act when Reimu acts, making every step part of the tactical puzzle. Unlike harsher Mystery Dungeon-style games, story dungeons let Reimu retain her levels and equipment after defeat, so progress feels forgiving without removing the need to prepare for traps, status effects, and dangerous monster groups. New areas connect through fast travel, while weapons for the right hand and defensive gear for the left hand offer distinct abilities to experiment with.

Progress outside the dungeons matters as much as a strong sword: helping Gensokyo’s residents earns boards that permanently raise core stats, gradually shaping a tougher and more capable Reimu. Hakurei Shrine also grows from a battered home base into a useful hub as Suika assists with facility upgrades and travel conveniences. The result stands apart from genre peers through its welcoming persistence systems, lavishly redrawn equipment, and the appeal of seeing Touhou characters in a full dungeon-crawling campaign rather than another bullet-hell showdown. Fans of Shiren the Wanderer, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, or Touhou’s cast should feel immediately at home, while roguelike newcomers benefit from its less punishing approach to failure.
