A supernatural disturbance above Gensokyo’s Human Village turns a routine spring into a barrage-filled investigation, as divine spirits gather around an ancient mausoleum and hint at a resurrection with serious consequences. Touhou Shinreibyou ~ Ten Desires is a vertical scrolling bullet-hell shooter built around dense projectile patterns, split-second movement, and the series’ playful blend of shrine-maiden folklore, ghosts, Taoist legends, and offbeat humor. Its visual style is bright, clean, and unmistakably anime, but the action is demanding from the opening stage onward. The mood balances charming character banter with escalating magical duels that can fill nearly every safe space on screen.

Players choose from Reimu, Marisa, Sanae, and Youmu, each bringing a distinct shot type, movement feel, and bomb attack to the six-stage campaign. The basic loop is classic danmaku survival: fire continuously, dodge patterned waves, collect items, defeat midbosses and bosses, then learn the exact routes needed to survive stronger attempts. Defeated enemies release differently colored divine spirits, which supply score, power, lives, and bombs while also charging the central Trance meter. Activating Trance grants a short burst of enhanced power and item collection, while dying with a charged gauge can trigger it automatically, creating a useful but risky recovery system.

Rather than relying on random chaos, the game’s bosses present readable patterns that reward repetition, calm positioning, and deliberate use of bombs. Ten Desires stands out through its spiritual-item economy and its memorable roster, including the relentless zombie Yoshika, hermit Seiga, Taoist prince Miko, and the tanuki Mamizou in the extra stage. It is shorter and more focused than many modern shooters, yet its multiple characters, difficulty levels, score chasing, and brutal extra content give it substantial replay value. Fans of Mushihimesama, Dodonpachi, or earlier Touhou releases find plenty to master, while newcomers can enjoy it if they are willing to treat defeat as part of learning.
