Transient: Extended Edition casts you as Randolph Carter, an augmented investigator living inside Providence, one of humanity’s last sealed refuges after environmental collapse. Its mood is oppressive and contemplative rather than action-heavy, blending hard-edged future technology with Lovecraftian anxieties about identity, reality, and forces too vast to understand. The Extended Edition expands the original narrative with additional material, refinements, and a new conclusion.

Most of the experience revolves around first-person investigation: you examine environments, collect contextual clues, speak with unusual characters, and piece together what is happening to Carter and the people around him. His PHI implant functions as the key tool, allowing you to scan objects, uncover hidden information, and bypass security systems through simple hacking challenges. Puzzles range from environmental observation and code-based locks to inventory-style interactions, while trips into dreams, simulations, and other distorted realms constantly change the visual language of the adventure. Progress remains largely linear, keeping the emphasis on story, atmosphere, and the gradual unraveling of its central mystery rather than combat or open-world wandering.

What separates it from many sci-fi adventures is the confidence of its hybrid setting: grimy alleyways, enclosed megacity life, ancient occult imagery, and virtual spaces all feel part of the same unsettling universe. The game has the deliberate pace of a classic point-and-click mystery translated into a first-person format, supported by detailed scenery and a suitably ominous electronic score. Fans of Observer, SOMA, and the developers’ earlier Conarium should find plenty to appreciate, especially if they enjoy reading notes and following dense lore. Players seeking frequent combat, rapid puzzles, or horror built on jump scares may find it too measured, but patient newcomers to narrative adventure games can still follow its investigation without genre expertise.
