Life as a hunted underworld creature gives Underlings a sharper edge than the usual survival sandbox. Rather than playing the heroic adventurer, you are an “evil” outcast trying to leave a violent past behind and carve out a quiet existence in a world that refuses to allow one. Dangerous wildlife, hostile forces from hell, and relentless bosses turn every expedition into a risk assessment. The mood is tense, scrappy, and often darkly funny: building a home matters, but losing it and fleeing to start over is always part of the possibility.

Survival begins with scavenging food and materials, then expands into crafting weapons, armor, tools, and increasingly capable defenses. You search procedurally generated maps for useful resources and a defensible place to settle, while farming and animal breeding provide longer-term stability. Raids force players to think beyond basic construction, since a base needs to withstand attacks rather than merely look impressive. Four modes let players set the pressure level: Sandbox removes raid worries, Easy and Normal offer more conventional survival challenge, and Hardcore turns every mistake into a potentially final one. Up to four people can cooperate, splitting gathering, building, and combat duties when enemy hordes arrive.

Random worlds and the constant threat of destruction give each run a different rhythm, whether you become a careful homesteader or a nomadic survivor rebuilding after disaster. Underlings stands out through its reversed fantasy premise and its willingness to make failure a meaningful, sometimes catastrophic part of progression instead of a minor inconvenience. Its visuals and systems lean toward straightforward indie survival rather than elaborate narrative spectacle, so players should expect to create their own stories through close calls and improvised bases.
