Beneath a dead Earth, humanity survives in sprawling metro tunnels where every station is a fragile city-state and every route between them invites danger. UnderRail is a hard-edged, old-school isometric RPG built around methodical turn-based combat, difficult choices, and the feeling that the next locked door may conceal either valuable supplies or a squad of armed raiders. Its subterranean setting is more than a backdrop: flooded caverns, fungal forests, industrial ruins, and sealed research complexes make the underground feel vast, hostile, and surprisingly varied. The tone is bleak and tense, with faction wars and personal ambition constantly threatening the little stability that remains.

Character creation determines far more than dialogue flavor, as your attribute spread and skills shape the weapons, armor, crafting options, stealth tactics, and psionic abilities available throughout the campaign. Combat rewards positioning, action-point management, environmental traps, grenades, and carefully prepared builds; rushing into a fight without the right ammunition or a retreat plan often ends badly. Players travel between stations, take contracts, investigate conspiracies, loot abandoned facilities, trade for supplies, and decide which factions deserve support or sabotage. Crafting is particularly important, letting resourceful characters assemble guns, melee weapons, chemical tools, armor, and specialized equipment instead of relying entirely on random drops.

What separates UnderRail from many modern RPGs is its willingness to be demanding without constantly explaining itself. Quest solutions often come from paying attention to dialogue, experimenting with skills, finding alternate paths, or returning later with better gear, while the world rarely scales itself down to protect an unprepared character. Its dense build system supports radically different runs, from stealthy crossbow specialists and knife fighters to heavily armored gun users or destructive psi wielders. Fans of the original Fallout games, Atom RPG, and deep tactical character-building will find a rewarding underground adventure here, though newcomers should expect a steep learning curve and save often.
