Piloting a customizable ship forms the heart of the loop, with real-time dogfights, equipment upgrades, faction work, and long-haul navigation tying its activities together. Players can mine rare materials, move contraband and artifacts between stations, raid spacetrains as a pirate, investigate abandoned stellar settlements, or hunt the creatures emerging from storms. There is no instant map hopping; travel happens across 114 connected systems, though accelerated lanelines help make major routes manageable and give the world a stronger sense of distance. A main campaign of 16 missions provides direction, while 45 side jobs, 36 bosses, 68 enemy varieties, and more than 500 ship components support a far longer completionist run.

What separates Underspace from many modern space sandboxes is its deliberate emphasis on authored locations instead of endlessly repeated procedural planets. Every system is meant to contain a point of interest, encounter, secret, or threat, and the storm system adds unpredictability without abandoning handcrafted world design.
