Utawarerumono: ZAN

Yamato’s political turmoil becomes the backdrop for a brisk, anime-styled action RPG that trades much of Utawarerumono’s visual-novel pacing for crowd-clearing combat. Utawarerumono: ZAN follows amnesiac protagonist Haku and his growing circle of allies as they become entangled in court conspiracies, military invasions, and the secrets surrounding masked warriors. The mood balances earnest war drama, comedic party banter, and flashy battlefield spectacle, with a soundtrack that gives every encounter an unusually energetic pulse. It works as a condensed retelling of Mask of Deception rather than a full replacement for that story-heavy original.

Battles play like a streamlined musou-style hack-and-slash game, asking players to carve through groups of enemies with light and heavy strings, launchers, dodges, and screen-filling special attacks. A four-character party can be assembled before missions, and swapping fighters during combat lets you react to situations with different weapon styles, speeds, and skill sets. Successful attacks build Zeal for Chain Attacks, while Overzeal opens the door to stronger finishing moves when a battle needs to end quickly. Between stages, equipment upgrades, character growth, and formation choices provide light tactical preparation, although the emphasis remains firmly on action rather than deep strategy.

Its best feature is the way familiar Utawarerumono characters become playable combatants, turning personality-driven scenes into opportunities to experiment with distinct fighting styles. More than 80 music tracks, including rearranged series favorites, make the presentation feel more celebratory than the often somber narrative premise suggests. Stage design and enemy encounters are relatively straightforward, so players looking for the huge maps or mechanical complexity of Dynasty Warriors may find it limited. Fans of anime action games, Fate/Extella, and the Utawarerumono cast will get the most from it, while newcomers can enjoy the combat but may want Mask of Deception for the fuller emotional context.
