Vernal Edge casts you as Vernal, a fierce young fighter searching for the father who vanished from her life, with an amnesiac automaton called Chervil as her only steady companion. The story leans into revenge, lost memories, and political decay, but its colorful pixel-art presentation keeps the adventure lively rather than relentlessly bleak. It is a fast, demanding action-platformer built around momentum and the satisfaction of forcing your way into places that initially seem unreachable.

Vernal cuts through enemies with a combo-driven sword style, chaining strikes, aerial attacks, evasive movement, and magic into aggressive encounters that reward practice. New traversal abilities such as dashes, slides, and improved jumps gradually open locked routes through towns, hostile facilities, and elaborate dungeon spaces, giving exploration the familiar Metroidvania rhythm of revisiting old ground with new options. Combat offers enough flexibility for players to develop favored attack sequences instead of relying on one safe pattern, while bosses test timing, positioning, and resource management. Haricot’s islands are not arranged along a rigid path: Vernal pilots her own vessel between them, allowing a more self-directed route through the campaign than most genre peers provide.

That aircraft-based freedom is Vernal Edge’s strongest distinguishing feature, turning world navigation into a meaningful choice rather than a menu between levels. Its environments combine crisp, expressive sprite work with dense screens full of hidden passages, upgrades, and shortcuts, so curiosity often pays off even away from the main objective. Fans of Castlevania-style exploration, the technical combat of action brawlers, and the open-ended structure of games like Axiom Verge should find plenty to like, though the brisk combat can be punishing for players who avoid learning combos. Newcomers can still enjoy the clear movement progression and striking world, while seasoned Metroidvania players are likely to appreciate its unusual freedom of route selection.
